White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt will leave her post at the end of August to spend more time with her family, President Donald Trump announced.

A High-Profile Departure

Leavitt, 28, became the youngest person to serve as White House press secretary. She has been a prominent voice for the administration at the briefing-room podium and in television interviews.

She recently returned to public duties after the birth of her second child. Leavitt described the decision as bittersweet, while Trump praised her work and said he respected her choice to focus on her young family.

An Outside Role Is Expected

Trump said Leavitt will remain in his political orbit as an outside adviser. That would allow her to advise the president without carrying the daily responsibilities of the press secretary’s office.

The press secretary is chosen directly by the president and does not require Senate confirmation. The White House has not announced a permanent successor.

Why This Matters

The press secretary is the administration’s most visible daily spokesperson. A transition can change the tone, pace and strategy of White House communications during a midterm season.

What to Watch

Watch for an announcement of Leavitt’s successor, the timing of the handoff and any change to the cadence or format of briefings.
