Rep. Joyce Beatty has made an emergency request for a federal court to prevent the Kennedy Center from restoring President Donald Trump’s name to the building while a legal dispute continues.

The Emergency Request

Beatty, an Ohio Democrat and ex officio Kennedy Center trustee, argues that adding Trump’s name back would conflict with an earlier court order. The center says no engraving is planned before Sept. 8, giving the court time to consider the request.

The dispute follows a board vote to add Trump’s name. A federal judge previously ordered the name removed, finding that the governing statute designates the building as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy.

Kennedy Center leaders describe their broader plans as an effort to repair the building, increase support and reshape programming. The institution is preparing for a major renovation and off-site performances.

Supporters of the board say it has authority to steward the institution. Opponents argue that Congress, not the board, controls the statutory name of a national memorial.

Why This Matters

The outcome could define how far a presidentially appointed board may go in changing the identity of an institution whose name and memorial purpose are set by federal law.

What to Watch

Watch for the court’s response before Sept. 8, any appeal and whether Congress considers legislation clarifying the center’s name or governance.
